Como usar a expressão "supposed to"

1. Forma afirmativa

      Quando queremos dizer que algo deve acontecer no presente:

➡️ I’m supposed to study for the test.
      Ou seja: É para eu estudar para a prova.

     Se fosse no passado, diríamos:
➡️ He was supposed to study for the test.
      Traduzindo: Era para ele estudar para a prova.


2. Forma negativa

Quando queremos dizer que algo não deve acontecer:

➡️ You’re not supposed to park here.
Significa: Não é para você estacionar aqui.

No passado:
➡️ They weren’t supposed to be late.
Significa: Não era para eles se atrasarem.


3. Perguntas

    Também podemos fazer perguntas com supposed to:

➡️ Are we supposed to wear uniforms?
     Que significa: É para usarmos uniforme?


4. Exemplos do dia a dia

✔️ I’m supposed to call my mom tonight.
      É para eu ligar para minha mãe hoje à noite.

✔️ He was supposed to be here at 8.
     Era para ele estar aqui às 8 horas.

✔️ We’re not supposed to use phones in class.
     Não é para usarmos celular na aula.


5. Dica importante

    Muita gente erra e fala: “I supposed to go”. ❌
    Mas isso está errado, porque falta o verbo to be.
     O correto é: “I’m supposed to go”. ✅

Era para você estar na reunião agora.

Speaker 1: You’re not supposed to use your phone in class.
Não é para você usar o celular na sala.
Speaker 2: Sorry, I was just checking the time.

Que horas é para embarcarmos no avião?
Speaker 2: At 7:30. But it might be delayed.
Às 7h30. Mas pode estar atrasado.

Dialogue 5 – Friends

Speaker 1: We were supposed to meet yesterday! Where were you?
Era para nos encontrarmos ontem! Onde você estava?
Speaker 2: Sorry… I was supposed to call you, but my phone died.
Desculpa… era para eu ter te ligado, mas meu celular morreu.

Dialogue 6 – At the gym

Speaker 1: You’re supposed to stretch before exercising.
É para você alongar antes de se exercitar.
Speaker 2: Oh, I never do that. Maybe that’s why I get sore.
Ah, eu nunca faço isso. Talvez seja por isso que eu fico dolorido.

Dialogue 7 – In traffic

Speaker 1: Are we supposed to turn left here?
É para a gente virar à esquerda aqui?
Speaker 2: No, we’re supposed to keep straight until the gas station.
Não, é para irmos em frente até o posto de gasolina.

Dialogue 8 – At a concert

Speaker 1: They were supposed to start at 8.
Era para eles começarem às 8.
Speaker 2: Yeah, it’s already 8:30. What’s going on?
Sim, já são 8h30. O que está acontecendo?

Dialogue 9 – Family

Speaker 1: You’re supposed to be in bed by now.
Era para você já estar na cama.
Speaker 2: But I’m not even sleepy!
Mas eu nem estou com sono!
